The building was constructed in 1542 which make it the oldest church in Antigua still function
Earthquakes in 1565, 1717 1751 and 1773 partly destroyed the complex, however superb rebuilding and reconstruction was done afterwards.
On the large courtyard you can find the entrace to the church, the monastery ruins and museum.The facade consist of Solomonic columns and niches with sculptures of saints and friars.

In the center of the park, you will find the beautiful the mermaids fountain. The fountain was constructed in 1738, again by Diego de Porres, the master architect of Antigua. It was reconstructed in the beginning of the 20th century after it was heavily damaged.

The church and monaster were founded in 1699 by a group of clarisas nuns from Mexico, The earthquake of 1717 so severely damage the building and its tile roof that the nuns could not stay.
It was not opened again until 1734, when it was rebuilt by Diego de Porres, the master architecture of the city. After the destruction of the 1773 earthquake, it was abandoned. The 1874 earthquake further demolished the building, leaving little more than ruins. Since 1944 When Antiua was declared a national monument, this location has been open to visitors.
